A special graveside dedication ceremony will take place for two Civil War soldiers in Greene County this weekend.

The Greene County Genealogical Society invites the public to the Junction Township Cemetery on Saturday, May 30th at 1pm for the dedication of Sergeant Isaac H. Ford.  As part of the event, the Honor Guard Unit, Company “A”, 49th Regiment Iowa Veteran Volunteer Infantry will perform the ceremony.  First Lieutenant David M. Lamb will be in full Civil War uniform and will lead the proceedings.

The veteran’s organization contacted the local genealogical society a few years ago, because one of the volunteers said that Ford’s grave was unmarked.  After extensive research to find a descendant of Ford, Richard Van Pelt was contacted and filled out the necessary paperwork for the Department of Veteran’s Affairs to give a free military grave marker.

Military veteran Aaron Schroeder, owner of Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home paid for the installation of the gravestone.

Ford moved to Iowa from Ohio in 1860 and enlisted in the Civil War in 1861.  He was discharged in September of 1865.  He was involved in several battles including Corinth and Memphis.  He moved from Jones County to Greene County after the War and lived there until he died in 1906.

Another Civil War veteran, R.G. Martin will also be recognized that day.  His gravestone is also at Junction Township Cemetery.

The ceremony is free and open to the public.
