The 2015 high school baseball season is scheduled to begin tonight for the Greene County Rams. Coach Mark Sawhill’s team plays host to PCM (Monroe) at Allensworth Field in Jefferson in what is also the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference baseball opener. Both teams were 11-15 overall and 8-9 in the conference in 2014, good for a tie for fifth place among 10 teams. The Rams and Mustangs each won on its home diamond a season ago.
PCM lost more key players to graduation a year ago than did the Rams including three players that batted .300 or higher. The Rams only had three players hit .300 or better, and two of those are back in senior Alex Rasmussen (.325) and junior Daric Whipple (.303). Seniors Colton Fitzpatrick and Riah Nelsen are set to lead the pitching staff. Both are right handers that walk very few and can strike people out.
Air time on KG98 is set for 7 p.m. with first pitch scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
