Eager to start the season with a renewed hitting approach, ADM baseball will have to wait one more day after Tuesday night’s season opener at home against Des-Moines Roosevelt was washed out by rain. No make up date has been announced.
Having lost their top three hitters to graduation, ADM is hoping to avoid a drop-off from an offense that scored 190 runs last season, third-best in the Raccoon River Conference.
Tigers head coach Jason Book said one thing ADM’s hitters must do is swing and miss less often.
“Our biggest problem and what has hindered us the most the last few years has been strikeouts,” Book said. “Not adjusting to the count, to the at-bat, to what the pitcher could be throwing and just kind of swinging freely, rather than forcing yourself to get the ball in play. So that’s what we really have to focus on, is get the ball in play and give ourselves a chance to get on base rather than striking out and dragging the bat back to the dugout.”
ADM struck out 22 percent of the time last season (187 strikeouts in 843 at-bats).
The Tigers may not need too much offense Tuesday night, though, with senior ace Sam Kornstad on the hill. The Iowa Central Community College commit posted a 1.75 ERA in nine starts covering 52 innings last season.
We’ll have the call Tuesday night on K107 and raccoonvalleyradio.com, with pregame coverage starting at 7:15 p.m.
