Perry junior Mariah Duffy always loved to run.  However, she didn’t compete at the high school level the past 2 years due to being a member of the Perry soccer program.  Duffy returned to the Perry track team this spring for the first time since middle school and has earned a berth in the state tournament as the anchor leg in the 4×800 meter relay.

“I always enjoyed running,” smiled the 3 sport Perry student-athlete.  I went out for middle school track and really missed it the past two years.  I wanted to get back into running shape and start competing.  It’s totally different from just running on your own and it took a few weeks for me to get back in the swing of things.  A track meet can be a circus and you’re constantly monitoring your pacing.  At the beginning of the year I was way off but right now I feel I am back in my groove and feeling really good.”

Duffy is known for her long distance running and was a steady contributor in the 1500 for Head Coach Matt Hardy this year.   However, the junior found her comfort zone with the 4×800 relay squad for a couple of reasons.

“I love the team aspect to the relay.  Hanging out with the girls and working to improve as a team has been really enjoyable for me.  I also like the 800 run.  I feel the 1500 prepared my endurance to become a better 800 runner.  I can pace myself and push a little harder in the 800 since its two laps shorter.”

Duffy is classified as a dual sport participant with soccer still serving as her primary sport and track listed as a secondary sport.  One year out for high school track and one state qualifying berth.. not to bad for a girl just enjoys running.
