When the Class 3A girls’ high jump begins at 11:30 a.m. Thursday for the 2015 Coed State Track & Field Championships at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Greene County will be represented by not one, but two jumpers. Freshmen Megan Durbin won the Atlantic State Qualifying Meet on May 14 and sophomore Nadia Fisher was the runner-up, and both were automatic State qualifiers. Fisher is also in the shuttle hurdle relay, and those were the same events she competed in on the State level in 2014. The high jump is Durbin’s lone State event, and the freshmen has been one of Class 3A’s best this season with a personal record leap of 5′ 4″ at Woodward on April 28.

When asked about having her more experienced teammate jumping in the same event, Durbin said, “I wouldn’t want it any other way. We’ll be there to  help each other and talk to each other. We’ll enjoy it and make the best out of it.” Durbin has never been to Drake Stadium, while Fisher commented on the atmosphere. “It’s just at lot different because you have so many people around you and there’s other races going on and everyone’s screaming. It’s a lot to take in, but it’s a lot of fun.”

Counting the two high jumpers, the Greene County girls have 11 events at State while the Rams have seven boys’ events. All three Raccoon Valley Radio stations will have updates on area athletes May 21, 22, 23.
