A bill that has been talked about since the beginning of the Iowa legislative session remains at the forefront, which is making fireworks legal for the public to use.
District 24 Senator Jerry Behn, who is on the Senate’s Ways and Means Committee, says the bill passed out of committee by a vote of 9-6. He voted in favor of the bill so that it can be brought to the full Senate for consideration. However, if the bill is considered on the Senate floor for a vote, Behn says he reserves his final decision based on feedback from people in his district.
“I’m just relying on contacts. If I get more people that want me to vote for it, I’ll vote for it and if I get more people that want me to vote against it, I’ll vote against it. I’m trying to do what the people in the district (24) want and it’s been pretty close so far.”
Some of the parts of the bill include hours that fireworks shouldn’t be allowed to be ignited and increasing licensing fees for stores to sell them.
The bill has to go through the House before it can end up on the governor’s desk for final approval. Those that want to voice their opinion to Behn can call his office at 515-242-5059 or email him at jerry.behn@legis.iowa.gov.
