The Perry City Council approved the first of three readings to repeal and replace the City’s rental code at their meeting this week.
City Administrator Butch Niebuhr says it’s a lengthy process to get an ordinance into effect.
“You won’t see this going into effect until probably July 1st because once the ordinance is in effect, the Council has to do a resolution on the cost of inspections. We do the cost different, instead of putting those into the ordinance, since they are so cumbersome to change and take a public hearing and three readings. So by doing it by resolution they can make those changes or tweak those fees.”
The Council has been known to suspend the rules and pass the second and third, or final, readings of an ordinance in one meeting rather than separately. Niebuhr says he doesn’t see that happening with this issue. Therefore, the third reading of the ordinance will likely be on the May 18th agenda.
