On Monday, a Grand Junction resident was burning trash that led to a field fire in which firefighters helped to put it out. The field fire was during the red flag warning that was issued by the National Weather Service.
Sheriff Steve Haupert says a red flag warning is used when there’s high winds suggesting that people not burn trash or yard waste.
However, Haupert notes that weather conditions are more favorable this week for people to do controlled burns. Haupert asks that you notify the Law Enforcement Center (LEC) about your location and the time that you will be doing the burn. He talks about what could happen if someone doesn’t notify them.
“The destruction of the fire, if it does get out of hand there could be criminal charges. And there is possibly a citation for burning that we weren’t advised of.”
