As you make plans for spring break and summer vacations, there are some safety precautions to keep in mind.
Greene County Sheriff Steve Haupert recommends notifying the Law Enforcement Center (LEC) in Jefferson of when you will be on vacation and either the Sheriff’s office of the Jefferson Police Department can make periodic house checks while you’re gone. Other safety reminders includes locking all doors and windows, using automatic timers for lights and T.V.’s and having a neighbor or a friend watch over your house.
With the advent of social media, people tend to post pictures of their vacations while they are away from home. Sheriff Haupert advises to not do that for concerns of potential break-ins.
“It’s just like putting the sign on the front door (of your home). There are a lot of other people that would like to take advantage of us. It’s just one of those safety precautions that we would rather not (have) half the world know that we are gone.”
