Anybody living on a flood plain knows that home water damage in wet years is near inevitable. Adair and Guthrie County Emergency Management Coordinator Bob Kempf says it’s a good idea to make sure you have the correct type of homeowner’s insurance if you live near water. “Making sure that if you’re in a flood prone area, that you have signed up for flood insurance. Flood insurance is different than your normal household insurance. It is a separate policy. Most homeowner’s insurance policies do not cover flooding. One of the things you can get is a sewer backup rider on your homeowner’s policy, but that does not cover flooding.”
Kempf says every homeowner’s policy is different in covering weather events and it’s always a good idea to review what your home is insured against.
