Agriland FS has been assessed a $4,000 penalty and $5,463 in fish restitution and investigative costs by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources for an ammonia discharge into Guthrie County’s Brushy Creek. DNR documents state that on April 11th, 2014, 4500 pounds of anhydrous ammonia was released from storage tanks into the Brushy Creek, after a bridge collapsed that the ammonia tanks were being transported over. A fish kill study done after the spill found that nearly 17,000 fish were killed as a result of the incident.
The DNR noted in the report that the effect of the ammonia spill was felt as far away as Des Moines, where ammonia which had seeped into the South Raccoon River caused Des Moines Water Works to temporarily stop using its Raccoon River water supply.
