Five ADM wrestlers advanced to the state tournament in Des Moines over the weekend during district competition at Ballard.
The group includes three Tigers that secured back-to-back appearances: juniors Nathan Heath (285 pounds) and Zach Johnston (160) and senior Trevor Harsh (138), and two that are going for the first time: sophomore Cole Bennett (182) and senior Zach Ostendorf (220).
Harsh, Johnston and Bennett all won their weight classes, while Heath and Ostendorf are moving on as runners-up. Harsh won a 6-0 decision over Austin Moen and Johnston a 12-4 Major Decision over Dylan Coffin, both opponents of Saydel, while Bennett got his title via fall against Van Meter’s Isaac Benton.
Ostendorf made it to the championship match but suffered a fall 58 seconds in. He rebounded to win by rule over Ballard’s Easton Moody and secure his berth to Des Moines.
Heath, meanwhile, faced off in the championship match with nemesis Alex Silberstien, who had already dealt Heath with two of his three losses this season. Silberstien again got the upper hand via fall less than one minute in, but Heath bottled whatever frustration he had and took it out on Anthony Hanson of Carlisle with a fall just 13 seconds into the match to punch his ticket to the state tourney.
Junior Hunter Gibson finished third at 195 pounds and senior Kyle Wilkerson fourth at 120 pounds.
The state tournament begins on Thursday in Des Moines.
