Perry High School Presents Annual Jukebox Concert Tonight

There are plenty of Valentine’s Day entertainment options in Perry this weekend.  If you’re looking for some live music, stop by the Perry Performing Arts Center tonight for the high school’s annual Jukebox Concert.

Vocal Music Director Jenn Nelson says this concert touches on a wide variety of popular music from several decades.

“This is more of a pops style concert, with popular music.  So you’ll hear some songs form the mixed choir, some old favorites, we’re doing ‘The Longest Time’ by Billy Joel… and then we’re also working in ‘Mirrors’, a Justin Timberlake song.  So we have some a little older and some more contemporary.  The guys have been working on ‘Stand By Me’ and then the girls are working some fun songs, ‘Chapel of Love’, ‘I Say a Little Prayer’ and then our theme song Heart and Soul” says Nelson.

The concert will also feature some solos and duets that were auditioned and selected for the show.

It all takes place starting at 7pm in the Performing Arts Center.  Tickets are available in advance at the high school office for $5 for adults and $3 for students, or you can purchase them at the door.

Perry Man Arrested After Officers Find Marijuana Plants in His Home

A 20 year-old Perry man faces several charges, including three felonies, after marijuana plants were found in his home.

Police Chief Eric Vaughn, says his department executed a search warrant at 1306 Evelyn Street in Perry around 8:45am Tuesday, after receiving information that someone was growing marijuana in the house.

While looking through the home, officers found approximately 20 marijuana plants, along with additional evidence that the drugs were being grown in the residence, such as marijuana in various stages of drying, lighting, buckets of dirt, different forms of fertilizer and information on how to grow marijuana.  In addition, police also found several containers of the drug that had already been processed and labeled for sale.

Dakota Kai Nicolaisen was home at the time the warrant was executed.  He is charged with two counts of failure to affix a drug tax stamp, manufacturing marijuana and possession of marijuana with the intent to deliver – all class D felonies.  In addition, Nicholaisen also faces four misdemeanor counts of unlawful possession of prescription drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office and Mid Iowa Narcotics Enforcement Task Force assisted with the case.

Logan Man Arrested Twice in Perry on Drug Charges

A former Perry resident was arrested twice last week on multiple drug charges.

According to Perry Police Chief Eric Vaughn, officers came in contact with 50 year-old Richard Earl Bohner of Logan, Iowa when he was the passenger in a vehicle that was stopped for a traffic violation on Wednesday, February 4th.  Officers smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle and then searched Bohner, locating approximately eight ounces of marijuana.

Police then learned that Bohner came to Perry the same night in a separate vehicle and upon getting search warrant, officers found an additional eight ounces of marijuana in that vehicle.

Bohner is charged with two counts of failure to affix a drug tax stamp and possession with intent to deliver marijuana – both Class D felonies.  He is also facing an aggravated misdemeanor charge for possession of marijuana, third offense.

Three days later, around midnight on Saturday, February 7th, Perry Police were called to the 600 block of Park Street after a resident reported an unknown person knocking on his door.  Officers determined the person in question was Bohner and he was driving a vehicle that was found to have a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia in it.

As a result, Bohner was again arrested and charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Chief Vaughn says Bohner was booked into the jail and has since been released.

Another Dry Week in the Raccoon River Valley

The first month of 2015 started with a snow storm but remained calm and mild the rest of the month.  The same seems to be true for February, at least so far.

After the largest storm of the season last week, the Raccoon River Valley has been dry since our last report.

Perry’s precipitation total remains at 1.22 inches this month, or 0.43 inch above the normal total for the month.  Jefferson has received just under an inch of precipitation already, currently 0.06 inch remaining before the normal monthly average is met and Guthrie Center is showing just a quarter of an inch of precipitation so far this month, according to the National Weather Service.

There’s no strong chance of precipitation in the immediate forecast.
