Seven ADM wrestlers will head to Huxley on Saturday for a chance at a state tournament berth in the district competition at Ballard High School.

The team portion of ADM’s season ended Tuesday in a regional duals loss to Union, but those left standing are eager to get back on the mat.

“I think we’re definitely ready. The guys are pumped up,” head coach Justin Schmauss said. “We’re trying to keep it light and loose, not too stressful, and making sure they’re staying sharp and wrestling hard but not beating up on each other and wearing each other down. Because right now you’re either in shape or you’re not, so there’s no need to do any unnecessary drills or conditioning. I think we’re where we need to be.”

Three Tigers will try to make it back-to-back trips to the state tournament: juniors Zach Johnston and Nathan Heath, and senior Trevor Harsh.

Johnston battled through illness on Tuesday, when he suffered just his second loss of the season. Harsh, meanwhile, did not wrestle for a number of reasons, including to be cautious with a nagging injury. Schmauss said both will be ready to go for district competition.

Four other Tigers will try for their first trip to the state tournament: sophomore Cole Bennett, junior Hunter Gibson – who nearly made it last year, and seniors Zach Ostendorf and Kyle Wilkerson.
