The ADM girls and boys basketball teams suffered a sweep at the hands of the visiting Carlisle Wildcats in the final home games and doubleheader for both teams.
After nearly pulling the upset over the No. 3-ranked Lady Wildcats in Carlisle on January 13, the Tigers were hammered by Carlisle, 52-35. The boys, meanwhile, lost a heartbreaker, 70-67.
The ADM girls (8-12, 5-8 RRC) trailed by just four at half but struggled offensively in the second half. The Tigers turned it over on their first four possessions of the third quarter, a trend that continued for the rest of the game and lead to many a transition basket by the Wildcats, who outscored ADM 14-6 in the third quarter.
The Tigers could manage just five points in the fourth quarter, as Carlisle cruised to its 15th straight win. The Wildcats (19-1, 12-1 RRC) can clinch an outright conference title with a win in the regular season finale Friday at Ballard.
Carlisle’s Kaleigh Hauss had a team-high 12 points and junior Gabby Schnathorst chipped in 11. ADM was lead by 13 points from junior Molly Jacobsen. The ADM girls wrap up the regular season Thursday at Bondurant-Farrar.
The boys contest, on the other hand, came down to the wire. ADM had a one-point lead with 15 seconds to go before Carlisle pulled out the win during a wild sequence of events. The Tigers brought full-court pressure, and the Wildcats got it to Brayden Burk in the frontcourt. ADM then had a breakdown on defense as Burk whipped to a wide-open cutter in Noah Schmitt, who finished a circus shot while being fouled by Frank Weiland, giving Carlisle a one-point lead.
Schmitt missed the ensuing free throw, but the rebound went through the hands of Matt Larson and wound back up with Schmitt who was again fouled. This time he hit both free throws for the final margin, and Larson’s fadeway 3 for the tie at the buzzer was off.
ADM trailed by eight at halftime but roared to a four-point lead with its best quarter of basketball all season, a 27-15 effort that included a 13-3 run over the first 3:30 of the quarter. But the Tigers (3-16, 3-10 RRC) allowed 27 points in the fourth quarter of their fifth consecutive loss.
Carlisle (9-8, 8-5 RRC) was lead by Josh Hagedorn’s game-high 30 points. Max Evans added 15 and Schmitt added 10. ADM got 16 from Jake Sloss (15 in the second half), 15 from Jacob Hardy and 13 from Larson (11 in the second half).
ADM heads to Bondurant on Friday for its conference finale.
