Greene County High school sophomore Nick Schroeder qualified in two events for the Feb. 14 Iowa High School State Swim Meet at the YMCA in Marshalltown. Schroeder swims for Boone High School under an athletic sharing agreement. He qualified through performances at the Ft. Dodge District on Feb. 7 Schroeder was fifth in the 100 freestyle at the District and he qualified 23rd fastest for State in the field of 24. He also qualified in the 400 freestyle relay, which was fourth in the District and is eighteenth fastest prior to the State Meet.
Schroeder told Raccoon Valley Radio the District was tough. “We had one of the hardest districts in the whole state because we had Waukee and Ames and they’re pretty tough, so it was hard, but it was fun, too.” Although a sophomore, this is Schroeder’s first year as a competitive high school swimmer. He’s never been in the Marshalltown YMCA, one of the finest swimming facilities around. “I’ve heard it’s big with a lot of seating, so it should be fun,” he added.
Several Jefferson-Scranton and Greene County boys performed in state meets for Boone over the years, but mainly on relays. It’s been quite a few years since a student from Greene County qualified for a State swim meet as an individual.
