We might be less than three months away from this year’s Greene County Relay for Life event, but plans are already in place.
Coordinator Peg Raney says this year’s event will be on Saturday, April 25th from 9:30am-2:30pm at the Greene County Community Center in Jefferson.
Some of the activities will be the same as last year. There will be a cancer survivor reception and honorary walk in the morning, followed by the Color Out Cancer 5K walk/run. A community barbecue meal will be served around noon and a silent auction will go throughout the day.
Raney points out one change is how the luminarias will be handled this year. This past December, when Jefferson Matters: Main Street had its Christmas tree lighting ceremony in the courthouse, a special tree was made by the Greene County High School industrial tech class which featured luminarias. Raney explains how the luminarias will be used for this year’s Relay for Life.
“It went over so well, it was in the courthouse during the holiday season, and now we have an idea to take it around to some of the churches from now until the April 25th event. And if any of the churches would like to have that (they need) to contact Shirley Stapleton and we’ll see if we can get it to your church or other area.”
Raney notes that sponsorships and team registrations are now being accepted. There are several sponsorship levels including: $1,250 for platinum, gold for $1,000, silver level is $500, $250 for bronze and hour-of-hope for $100. In-kind sponsorships are also accepted.

American Athletic Incorporated, Spalding and Russell Athletics are donating the team t-shirts again this year. T-shirt sizes must be entered by the beginning of March to guarantee a shirt. Any business that is a gold sponsor or higher will have their logo included on the back of the t-shirt. Those must be submitted by February 20th. The bronze and hour-of-hope sponsors must be registered by March 27th.
