An otherwise joyous occasion for the ADM Tigers was spoiled Friday night in Adel by the visiting Boone Toreadors basketball teams, which swept ADM on senior night in Adel.
The ADM girls lost 47-44 to a Boone girls team that won its fourth straight. ADM lead 19-13 at half, but were hampered by a dreadful offensive performance in the third, when Boone outscored ADM 18-7. The Tigers turned it over several times in the quarter, while Toreador’s senior Carrie Overland capitalized with three 3-pointers. Overland scored a team-high 13 points with four made 3’s, all coming in the second half.
ADM (8-11, 5-7 RRC) found itself down by five entering the fourth quarter, and Boone at one point took an eight-point lead. But the Tigers put together a furious rally in the final 90 seconds. Boone (12-7, 6-6 RRC) hit 6-of-8 free throws in that span, while ADM came up with three pointers from Allie Cook and Sydney Bertman, and three free throws from Molly Jacobsen, who was fouled on a 3-point attempt.
After a miss at the stripe from Boone’s Dianna Slight, ADM raced across the timeline and called timeout with five seconds to go and the Toreadors up by 3. But ADM could only get off a two-point jumper that missed as time expired, sealing the loss.
Jacobsen finished with a game-high 14 points, including three 3-pointers, while Sydney Bertman chipped in 11. Boone’s Serena Sandvig had 11 and Mariah McPartland had 8, and went 5-of-6 at the line over the final 90 seconds.
The boys contest had a similar feel, as both teams struggled on offense in Boone’s 50-44 win. ADM had a 22-21 lead at half, but like the ADM girls, came out flat in the third and were outscored 16-7 in the third quarter.
Down eight entering the fourth, the Tigers (3-15, 3-9 RRC) got within two points on a Joe Sloss layup with about two minutes to go, but struggled with turnovers and fouls down the stretch. Boone’s Ethan Lewis hit all four of his free throws down the stertch, while freshman John Herrick came up with several key hustle plays and hit 3-of-4 free throws in the final minute to help seal the Toreador victory.
Sloss lead the way with a game-high 13 points, while fellow senior Johnny Reel had 12. Coming of a career-high 25-point performance Tuesday at Perry, sophomore Larry Larson had just two points.
Boone (6-11, 5-7 RRC) got 10 points from senior Danny Anderson and eight from leading scorer Ashton Clemmons.
The girls and boys are both back in action on Tuesday against Carlisle in what is the final home game for both teams.
