The Greene County High School basketball teams were on the road for a fourth straight night and the result was a pair of losses in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference play at Gilbert. The Tigers won the girls’ game by a 39-19 final, then raced to a 13-point boys’ win, 81-68. The Rams fell to 7-10 overall and 7-8 in girls conference play while the Gilbert girls improved to 13-5 and 12-3. On the boys’ side, Gilbert is in sole possession of first place in the HOIAC at 12-1 and they are 14-2 overall. The Greene County boys have lost four straight and are 6-10 overall and 6-8 in league play.
The Greene County girls had a tough night shooting the ball and had just four points more than halfway through the third quarter. Unofficially, the Rams were six of 38 from the floor and no Greene County player scored more than four points. Gilbert was led by senior Paige Hoiberg, daughter of ISU men’s head basketball coach Fred Hoiberg, with 14 points.
The boys’ game saw Gilbert lead 42-29 at halftime, but the Rams caught fire in the third quarter, shooting 10-16 with six three-pointers in the frame. Junior Tyler Beger led the charge with four three’s in the third period. Beger and Trey Tucker each finished with 18 points. The score was tied at 51-51 late in the stanza before the Tigers once again took command and they went on to the victory. Senior Wes Greder led Gilbert with 22 points.
The Greene County boys play this afternoon (Saturday) at 4:30 p.m. in the middle school gym in Jefferson vs. non-conference opponent Panorama. This marks the third day in a row and fourth time in five days Coach Jeramie Hinote’s Rams have had a game, something that hasn’t happened in some time for a Jefferson-based program. A JV game begins at 3 p.m., and coverage on KG98 starts at 4:15 p.m.
