The Dallas County ISU Extension and Outreach office is hosting a program this year aimed at promoting higher education for Latinos.
The Juntos: Together for a Better Education program is designed for parents and students in grades 8-12. The goal is to decrease the number of drop-outs and encourage families to work together and make education a priority. The program will focus on ways to improve levels of family communication, help both parents and students understand the requirements for graduation and explore options for college.
In 2012, only 56 percent of Latinos age 25 and older in Iowa received their high school diploma, that’s 37 percent less than the state average despite a steady increase in enrollment.
The program will be held in Perry on Sundays February 1st through March 1st, from 4-6:30pm at the Town Craft Center. The sessions will be delivered in Spanish. A light meal and free child care will be provided.
