CMB (Maxwell) and Greene County put on quite an offensive display in the middle school gym in Jefferson on Tuesday night on KG98. When all was said and done, it was the Rams winning in two overtimes, 93-88, in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference boys’ basketball. Coach Jeramie Hinote’s team is now 6-6 overall and 6-4 in the conference while CMB fell to 4-7 in league play and 5-8 overall.
Sophomore Trey Tucker sent the game into the first OT with a driving layup that just beat the buzzer and tied the game at 73-73. The Rams missed a last second shot at the end of the first extra session and the game remained tied, this time at 81-81. CMB led 86-83, but the Rams scored 10 of the last 15 points in the second OT for the win. The game was one of the highest scoring in the middle school gym in some time, perhaps decades. Tucker led all players with 31 points. Ram senior Landon Braun added 17 with 15 from junior Mitchell Gorsuch, 14 by junior Ried Lamoureux, and nine from senior Riah Nelsen. CMB had 26 points from senior Bryce Kemp, who fouled out early in the first OT, and 24 from junior Brady Stover, who entered the game averaging six points a contest.
The girls game saw the Rams even their HOIAC record at 6-6 and they improved to 6-7 overall with a 65-52 win, also heard on KG98. The Raiders fell to 2-13 and 2-10. A trio of seniors scored in double figures for the Rams led by 20 points from Kayla Mobley and 18 by Stacy Mears. Hannah Onken added 12. Mears was scoreless until the final second of the first half when her three-pointer put Greene County up 32-28. Coach Chad Morton’s team scored eight of the last night points before halftime, then built the lead to as many as 17 late in the game. Mackenzie Schmitz led CMB with 15 points. She entered the contest averaging 1.4 a game.
Greene County starts an extensive road trip by going to Jewell vs. South Hamilton on Friday night. The girls play at 6 p.m .with the boys to follow. Coverage on KG98 starts at 5:45 p.m. and both contests will be streamed on raccoonvalleyradio.com.
