Greene County senior Abe Yoder is making the most of his final high school wrestling season. He’s settled in at 132 lbs. and has compiled a 17-1 record and number 10 ranking in Class 2A by The Predicament. Yoder has 14 straight victories, hasn’t lost since the first week of the season, and since the loss has gone 2-0 against the opponent that handed him the one blemish to his record.
The previous two seasons saw Yoder wrestling up one or more weight classes from where he would have liked to have been. The reason was the competition in the Ram wrestling room as his weight was at such a high level, he had to go up, or not wrestle varsity. He made the move and did well, compiling 71 wins on the varsity level his freshman through junior seasons. Yoder told Raccoon Valley Radio it took a lot of work to get to this point. He added that winning the 132 lbs. title on Dec. 6 at the Dallas Center-Grimes tournament and knocking off a couple of highly regarded wrestlers in the process, put him on the map, so to speak.
The Rams have a formidable trio at consecutive weights with Yoder, fifth ranked Jordan Challen at 138, and sixth rated Tommy Bradshaw at 145 lbs. So far this season the trio has compiled a combined record of 42 wins and just four losses.
Head Coach Mark Sawhill told Raccoon Valley Radio that Abe has worked for everything he’s gotten, and noted it hasn’t always been easy to work his way into the varsity lineup. “He’s a great kid and we think there are some very exciting things ahead for him this season,” the coach added.
The next competition for Greene County wrestlers is on Jan. 8 in Alleman vs North Polk and South Hamilton.
