dnrA manure spill was contained before the leakage could get to a waterway in Greene County over the weekend.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources reports that on Saturday at 8am, a tractor-tanker spilled about 2,000 gallons of liquid manure three miles southwest of Scranton.  The tanker overturned when it got too close to the road’s edge.

The spill happened at the top of a hill by Hunter hog finishing facility.  Officials say when the accident happened, the Hunters dammed the ditch on each side of the spill, they checked for tile intakes and contracted to have manure pumped up and the soil in the ditch excavated and land applied back to the site.  They also notified DNR of the spill.

DNR Specialist Dan Olson says the Hunters acted appropriately to the situation and contained it before any of the liquid manure could get to any of the state waterways.

He added that any manure spills must be reported to the DNR within six hours by calling the 24-hour spill line at 515-281-8694.
