The ADM wrestling Tigers fell to 4-5 on the season with a pair of losses Thursday at Carlisle in what head coach Justin Schmauss described succinctly as “not a good night.”
ADM fell to Winterset 41-24 and the host Wildcats, 45-31. Individually, the Tigers’ big three performed well, as juniors Zach Johnston and Nathan Heath and senior Trevor Harsh won all of their matches.
The pair of losses was an early-season blow to an ADM team with aspirations of making it to the state tournament as a unit. But the Tigers don’t have much time to dwell on the loss with the 32-team Battle of Waterloo tournament Friday and Saturday, in which wrestlers will compete in eight matches over the two days.
It’s a fitting end to a particularly grueling week for ADM’s wrestlers, who have had to juggle finals with preparing for three straight days of wrestling competition.
“You know, in years past – this is the fourth year that I’ve been a part of the tournament with the team – generally, you can see Saturday that it starts wearing on the individuals,” Schmauss said. “And we know that as coaches, but we just want them to put the best effort that they can in and just fight through it.”
