Media Day was held at The Jefferson Fieldhouse on Tuesday for the Greene County High School wrestling team. The head coach of the Rams is Mark Sawhill and he’s assisted by Chris Conner, Eric Challen, and Bill Frederick. The wrestlers should get plenty of attention from the coaches as there are just 16 out for the sport, resulting in a wrestler to coach ratio of four to one. The numbers are among the lowest in the nearly 50 year history of high school wrestling based in Jefferson, but the coaching staff is trying to make the best of it. The low numbers do mean an opportunity for more attention to be paid to each wrestler, which could result in improvement.

Leading the way are a pair of Rams with State Tournament experience in senior Jordan Challen and junior Tommy Bradshaw. Both finished in the top 12 in the 2013 and ’14 State tournaments. Challen was at 132 lbs. last year and Bradshaw dropped down to 138 after starting the season at 145 lbs.

The Rams will not host a tournament this season, the first time that has happened since the 1970’s. The loss of the tourney means there are just three home dates and two of those are the first two dates of the season. The Rams host non-conference teams Ogden and Van Meter/Earlham on Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 5:30 p.m. in the middle school gym in Jefferson. That will be followed by action on Thursday, Dec. 4 in the middle school gym at 5:30 p.m. against a pair of Raccoon River Activities Conference programs in Winterset and Carroll at 5:30 p.m. On Dec. 6, the date the Rams normally would host a dual meet tournament, the varsity will be traveling to Grimes for the 15-team Dallas Center-Grimes Invitational starting at 10 a.m.
