This past weekend proved to be a busy one for the Greene County Sheriff’s office.

Sheriff Steve Haupert says they responded to seven vehicle-related accidents throughout the county.  Two were two-vehicle accidents with injuries, two were single-vehicle rollover accidents and three were single-vehicles that went off the roadway.

The five that involved single-vehicles were due to the winter weather conditions on the road.  Haupert is thankful that no one was seriously hurt and believes that their amount of accidents wasn’t close to some of the others around the state.  He talks about the first snowfall being a message for motorists to slow down.

“It just seems like it takes that first snowfall and ice on the roads for everyone to get acclimated as to probably 60 miles-per-hour on ice is not a real great thing to do.”

He suggests that everyone drive defensively and always be aware of the vehicle in front of you.  And as we endure high winds that cause snow to blow across the road, Haupert recommends you to not travel during those conditions.  However, if you have to, he notes that you should drive a comfortable speed and have your flashers and headlights on to better help those around you identify where you are at on the road.
