A Cedar Rapids man faces a felony charge after an incident with a Jefferson police officer.
Police Chief Dave Morlan tells Raccoon Valley Radio 37 year-old Jeffrey Lynn Jones was pulled over between Pinet and Wall Streets at 12:43am Wednesday after he was clocked going 45 miles per hour in a 25 mile per hour zone.
Morlan says Jones was in Jefferson as part of a construction crew working on a job in town. When speaking with the suspect, the officer was led to believe Jones was under the influence of alcohol. When asked to take a Field Sobriety Test, Jones refused to do so and made statements saying he was going to make the officer shoot him and he planned to fleet on foot.
The Greene County Sheriff’s Office then arrived on scene to provide backup. By this time, Jones had become non-compliant and was resisting arrest. The struggle ensued on the ground and the officer reached for his Taser to control the suspect, but Jones gave in and was apprehended.
A search of Jones’s vehicle led to the discovery of possible marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
Morlan notes that Jones is charged with a Class D Felony for his third offense of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, serious misdemeanors for possession of marijuana and driving while revoked and simple misdemeanors for interference of official acts, possession of drug paraphernalia and speeding.
Morlan points out that Jones is currently being held in the Greene County Jail under a $3,000 cash or surety bond and will remain in jail for warrants for probation violation from Cedar Rapids with a $5,000 bond.
