GCHS students with rakesAbout 900 people banded together to rake up leaves in several communities in Greene County on Monday.

Organizer Teresa Green says all high school and some middle school students plus school staff and community members and other volunteers raked 125 lawns of leaves in three hours.

She states that they also had 32 vehicles help to transport all the leaves to Daubendiek Park in Jefferson.  Green talks about the community service project being a win-win for the students and communities.

“We like to give back to the community because a lot of these people, they buy fundraising things from the kids, they attend our events including music and art shows and athletic events and it’s just a way to give back to them.  And along with that, one of our bonuses for the high school kids is that they get out of school at 1(pm) on Friday as a thank you them for helping us.”

Green would also like to thank Fareway Food Store in Jefferson for supplying them with 42 cases of bottled water along with Home State Bank, People’s Trust and Savings Bank, Wells Fargo Bank and Bunker’s Dunkers for the 75-dozen doughnuts.

The school-wide community service project has been going on for 18 years.
