A Guthrie Center teacher who beat cancer was the recipient of the Golden Apple Award, a State-wide monthly award sponsored, in part, by Allied Insurance to recognize the special achievements of teachers as pointed out by nominating students. Guthrie Center High School’s Ms. Lori McGivney was diagnosed with four types of cancer last year, and while undergoing five surgeries and two rounds of chemotherapy, she amazingly missed only a month’s worth of school all year. McGivney credits the positive environment of being around her students as a major factor in working through the ordeal. Doctors now say McGivney is cancer free.
