Gas leak pic

We have more information about the gas leak that was reported earlier this morning in Jefferson regarding voluntary evacuations from residents.  Earlier today, local authorities responded to a ruptured gas line at the Hy-Vee Incorporated construction site in Jefferson.

Police Chief Dave Morlan says at 9:33am this morning his officers, the Jefferson Fire Department, a deputy with the Greene County Sheriff’s office, Greene County Emergency Medical Services and Alliant Energy responded to the gas leak at the Hy-Vee construction site.

While Alliant Energy was handling the leak, Morlan notes that they notified all the residents immediately surrounding the Hy-Vee property about the leak and blocked off the roads around Hy-Vee’s property and out to Highway 4.

Alliant Energy Spokesperson Justin Foss says Hy-Vee’s contractor drove a spike into the ground and hit their plastic gas line on Friday, but the leak didn’t start happening until today when the spike was removed.  He states that Alliant Energy is investigating the matter but points out that before anyone is allowed to start digging into the ground, that the state requires you to call 8-1-1 to have all the utilities properly marked.

An investigation like this situation is their typical procedure that Alliant Energy follows adds Foss.

Crews are making the necessary repairs and the leak has been contained.  No one was injured in the incident and all roads are opened again.
