A meeting of a couple dozen individuals involved with the four county Heart of Iowa mental health region, including law enforcement officers, social workers and healthcare professionals met yesterday morning inside of the Guthrie County Courthouse. The broad, open discussion covered everything from the process of law enforcement apprehending those mentally ill, to the practice of transporting sick juveniles by ambulance rather than cuffed in the back of a squad car. Much of the conversation centered around the planned implementation of an around-the-clock mobile crisis mental health unit throughout the more rural parts of the four county Region of Dallas, Guthrie, Greene and Audubon, something that up until recently had never happened in Iowa.
