Greene County was a 17-14 high school football winner in Webster City on Friday night and the Rams improved to 2-0 in Class 3A District 2. Dean Lansman’s team is 2-3 overall. The Lynx fell to 1-2 in the district and 1-4 on the season. WC is coached by former Scranton High School coach Bob Howard.

The Rams led all the way, building a 17-0 lead in the third quarter, but the Lynx scored on consecutive second half possessions to make it a three point game with 11:37 left in the fourth quarter. WC would get no closer than the Rams’ 45 yard-line down the stretch and the Rams had their biggest win of the season.

The scoring opened with 3:50 to play in the first quarter on a Nick Schroeder field goal of 30 yards. That capped a 13 play, 64 yard drive. Jake Carey intercepted a pass on the next scrimmage play and had a 29-yard return to the Lynx 11. Carey would catch a TD pass covering those 11 yards from Daric Whipple and Schroeder’s extra point made it 10-0 with 2:20 to go in the opening stanza. The Rams increased the lead to 17-0 with 5:26 to play in third quarter on one of the longest drives in program history. Greene County covered 95 yards in just four plays to go up by three scores. The big play of the drive was a Dylan Hamilton 84 yard run on third down and two from the Rams 13 to the Lynx 3. JC Weitl scored the touchdown on a run of three yards and the extra point put the Rams up by 17.

Webster City responded by scoring late in the third quarter and early in the fourth. The first scoring drive went seven plays and 81 yards, with the second one covering 64 yards, also on seven plays. Gavin Dinsdale had both TD runs; one of three yards and another of 13. Dinsdale now has 11 TDs on the season with 10 of the scores taking place in the last three games.

With 11:37 left in the game it was a three-point contest. WC advanced the ball no further than the Rams’ 45 the rest of the night. The Greene County defense came up with five turnovers while the offense turned the ball over just one time. Jake Carey had two pass interceptions and Jordan Challen came up with a key pick late in the game on a great diving catch. Logan Lansman and Keyden Pollock recovered WC fumbles. Entering the game the Rams had taken the ball away just four times in four games.

Hamilton led the Rams with 120 yards rushing on 13 carries. Whipple was 9-17-1 passing for 82 yards and a score. Greene County totaled 244 yards of offense. Dinsdale led WC with 28 carries and 132 yards and the two touchdowns. The burly junior surpassed the 700 yard mark rushing this season. WC tallied 295 total yards.

The annual Greene County homecoming game is Friday, Oct. 3 at Linduska Field with eighth ranked Humboldt (4-1 2-1) providing the opposition. Coverage on KG98 starts at 6:45 p.m. with kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
