ADM High School Principal to Return to School Monday After Public Intoxication Arrest
Adel DeSoto Minburn High School Principal Lee Griebel will be back in the office Monday after an arrest in Iowa City earlier this month.
According to Superintendent Greg Dufoe, the district’s school board met in closed session to discuss the off duty conduct issue earlier this week. After discussing the topic it was decided that Griebel would receive a two week, unpaid suspension which is retroactive to September 8th, along with a letter of reprimand and other sanctions including community service.
The disciplinary action stems from a public intoxication arrest at the University of Iowa’s Kinnick Stadium during the Iowa versus Iowa State football game on September 6th.
Superintendent Dufoe says this is a serious matter, “Being a high school principal is a leadership position that requires a commitment to making quality decisions as a role model. Mr. Griebel made a serious mistake, and he accepts full responsibility for his actions”.
Principal Griebel pleaded guilty to the public intoxication charge. He was order to pay a $100 fine, along with court costs.
Dufoe adds that ADM High School will be even better as they work through the issue together. He thanks the students, staff and parents for making the school a family that cares deeply about each other.
Perry, Jefferson and Guthrie Center Surpass Normal Monthly Rainfall Totals
There’s almost two full weeks left in the month of September, yet all of our local weather reporting areas have at least met their monthly rainfall total already.
This past week was relatively dry for the Raccoon River Valley, in comparison to the very wet week prior, but that could change after this weekend with more rain in the forecast.
According to the National Weather Service, Guthrie Center received another 0.45 inches of rain this past week for more than 3.5 inches already this month. They are now 0.2 inch above the normal monthly rainfall total for September
Perry is currently right at their normal monthly rainfall total of 3.14 inches after receiving another 0.35 inches this week.
Jefferson is more than half an inch above their normal precipitation level already, registering almost one-third of an inch this week for a total of 3.54 inches this month.
Two Events at Forest Park Museum This Weekend
This week is a busy one for the Dallas County Conservation Board, with several different events happening throughout the County.
The first event of the weekend takes place Saturday at the Forest Park Museum. Museum Curator Pete Malmberg says the Insect Sweep is a chance to stop and take a look at the life going on all around us. Participants will walk around the area near the museum, looking for stick bugs, beetles, monarchs, praying mantises and other insects.
It takes place Saturday from 1-3pm and attendees are encouraged to wear long pants and close toed shoes.
If you would rather not venture out into the wild searching for bugs, stop by the Forest Park Museum on Sunday instead at 1:30pm for the Military Veterans of Dallas County lecture. Firearms and military historian Justin Alliss will talk about the military careers of several Dallas County veterans who died in combat. He will also be able to appraise firearms, so attendees can bring their unloaded guns with them for Alliss to check out.
This program is also free but registration is required. To reserve your spot call 465-3577.
Hy-Vee Hosts Pet Event with the Humane Society of Perry Today
The Perry Hy-Vee is teaming up with the Perry Humane Society for a new pet event this weekend.
As Bob Wilson with the Perry Area Chamber of Commerce explains, the event aims to help boost adoptions, raise funds and share information.
“They’re going to have the humane society out there with adoptable pets, along with some information. The idea here is to raise some cash, maybe some food or supplies, something like that for the humane society. But they’ll also explain to you how the process for licensing your animal works, or fees for our amazing dog park in town, along with animal regulations.”
It takes place Saturday from 10am to 2pm at the Perry Hy-Vee.
If you have questions call 465-5321.
CROP Walk in Perry Sunday
Those wanting to help with the battle against hunger are encouraged to join in on the annual CROP walk in Perry this weekend.
This year’s event starts in the north parking lot of the Dallas County Hospital at 1pm Sunday and includes either a two mile walk or a twelve mile bike ride, ending at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church where they can enjoy food and music.
Last year’s event around 130 CROP walkers raised more than $6,500 and the hope is that this year’s event will be even more successful.
Participants are asked to bring at least one nonperishable food item or the local food pantry.
