The ADM boys and girls cross country teams will have to wait a little bit longer to run their first races of the season after Thursday’s Urbandale Invitational at Urbandale Middle School was postponed due to extreme heat.
The invitational was rescheduled for 9 a.m. on Saturday, with two races on tap. Runners are divided up by grade level, with the first race scheduled for 9:10 a.m. and the second for 11:12 a.m.
ADM coach David Zwank was pleased that the race wasn’t cancelled altogether. He said he views the Urbandale invitational, along with Tuesday’s invitational at Winterset, as tuneup races in which runners can reacclimate themselves to competition, and give Zwank and his staff a chance to evaluate who will crack his varsity lineup this season.
Thursday’s heat index cracked triple digits, with temperatures hovering between the high 80’s and low 90’s.
“It’s a different feel running a Saturday morning than it will feeling running in an afternoon or evening, so I’m kind of curious to see how the kids respond to that,” Zwank said. “But I do know we need to race. It would have been a pretty rough run tonight.”
