A portion of the Raccoon River Valley Trail is closed in Guthrie County after extensive tree damage from Sunday’s thunderstorms littered the trail.
According to the Raccoon River Valley Trail Association, crews continue to work on repairs after the evening storm brought high winds and heavy rain to much of the area. One of the primary concerns is the Greenbrier Creek bridge just south of the Guthrie and Greene County line where a large tree fell and crushed the bridge railing.
Guthrie County Conservation Director and trail manager Joe Hanner was forced to close the trail from Herndon north to the County line. He says they hope to reopen later this week.
Crews have been hard at work since Monday moving dozens of trees off the trail. Sundays’ storm brought wind gusts of up to 80 miles per hour in Guthrie County.
