Emergency Management Coordinator Dennis Morlan says the storm that came through the County included up to 60 miles-per-hour straight line winds and lots of rainfall which caused several tree limbs to fall and some to knock out power lines and power poles.  He noticed on his radar that there was cloud rotation northwest of Churdan.  He activated the storm spotters to make certain that no tornadic activity was going to take place.  At no time was there ever any tornadoes spotted in the County.

Sheriff Steve Haupert says when Morlan activates the storm spotters, the Sheriff’s office is responsible to driving into where the worst part of the storm that is predicted to occur.  This time he was parked alongside Neola Avenue and 330th Street and he describes what he experienced at that moment that night.

“After the first wave of rain came through, the rain somewhat subsided.  And then when it came in again that’s when we had the highest wind in fact I thought the vehicle that I was driving, I held onto the steering wheel because I thought  the second time that the wind kind of tipped it upwards, I thought we were going to be rolling in the ditch, but we remained on all four wheels and it was exciting.”storm damage pic 2

Other damage results from the storm included 220 Midland Power Cooperative customers were without power in the County and only a handful of Jefferson Telecom customers were without service.  Power has been restored to all customers and crews were able to repair all power lines and poles.  There was no extreme structural damage or injuries reported from the storm.

Due to the soggy conditions for the last couple of days, the City of Jefferson has closed its free yard waste dump site at Daubendiek Park but they’ve established a temporary site by the City-owned swimming pool where residents can drop off their yard and tree debris.  Residents are also reminded that they can leave their tree limbs by the curbside this week and the City will pick it up for free.  City officials also remind residents that they can put their smaller twigs into the lawn and leaf bags without a sticker and the City will collect those without an additional fee this week.
