iowa state patrol One person is dead and two others were injured following a two vehicle crash in Greene County on Monday.

Officials with the Iowa State Patrol say 27 year-old Daniel Reetz of Boone was traveling westbound on US Highway 30 and was reportedly driving recklessly on the overpass bridge one mile east of Grand Junction.

Just before 9:30am, Reetz’s 2001 Chevrolet Impala crossed the centerline and hit a 2007 Cadillac Escalade that was driven by 25 year-old Lombardo Ramos of Oskaloosa.  The Iowa State Patrol reports that Reetz wasn’t wearing his seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene while Ramos and an unnamed female passenger were taken to the Greene County Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Greene County Sheriff Steve Haupert says it was a family of four with two children that were also in the Escalade and they didn’t sustained any injuries and everyone in the Escalade was wearing their seatbelts.

“We were certainly saddened that he lost his life, but at the same time, we were relieved that the young family had no major injuries and the children were safe after the accident.”

Greene County Emergency Management Coordinator Dennis Morlan, who was also at the scene, says this was the first fatal accident he’s been involved with on the overpass bridge in his 18 years as medical examiner of the county.

Traffic was re-routed for four hours while the scene was getting cleaned up and Sheriff Haupert notes that the Sheriff’s office, Grand Junction Fire and Rescue, Jefferson Fire Department, Iowa State Patrol and Greene County EMS all assisted at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.
