welcome centerWork was recently done on the exterior of the welcome center on the southeast corner of the downtown square in Jefferson.

Greene County Chamber Director Chris Henning says the 1970’s facade has been replaced with a more federalist look that they tried to match the Jefferson Kiwanis pavillion that sits on the southwest corner of the lot.  The roof has also been replaced along with the front entrance door has been moved for the northwest corner to the middle of the building.

Henning points out the C&R Construction of Jefferson helped with all the repairs to the exterior of the building.  Plus, the south wall was replaced with matching bricks to the rest of the structure.

Henning states that they’ve starting working on their second phase of the project with the interior work.  She comments that Jefferson native and Iowa State University architecture student Ashley Danielson is designing the layout of the inside and she is responsible for the outside look of the welcome center.

The inside will include a men’s and women’s public restroom which will be handicap-accessible, some office space and areas for displays and promotional information about different assets and places to visit throughout the County.

Funding for the projects have come from grants, loans and fundraising events.

Henning hopes to have the welcome center open by sometime next year.
