Hy-Vee’s Annual Pack the Bus Continues Through Sunday
The 2014-2015 school year kicks off in just a few short days and one local business is calling on residents to come help make sure all students are prepared for learning.
Hy-Vee’s annual school supply donation drive continues through this weekend. The goal is to pack a bus full of school supplies for local kids.
The store has $5 pre-packed sacks of supplies available for purchase and customers can decide which school they would like the bags to go to, or you can contribute to the Perry Food Pantry.
So if you have a few extra bucks to spare, help our local kids make sure they have the necessary materials to have a successful school year

Perry School Board Meeting Recap
The Perry Community School District Board of Education held their August meeting last night.
At the meeting the board heard from Kevin Long of the Shive-Hattery architect firm who outlined possible scenarios for the high school gym roof. Long says options are limited if the district wants to stick with the same style they currently have but if they’re willing to go away from the blue roof there are several ways they can go. Long says somewhere in the system that’s currently installed there’s a break, which is causing the condensation issue. He recommends staggering the joints of the installation so that air and moisture can not easily get through. He also presented a different locking system that should help prevent future years. He says there are several warranties available as well to help protect any problems with the roof, with the contractor being responsible for everything for the first five years. Long also expressed that contractors will have to have a minimum of seven years experience in order to bid on the project. As far as when to move forward, he said the best time to bid such a project is either the beginning of December or early January. Later in the meeting the board approved services and design services from Shive-Hattery.
Next the Board heard from business manager Kent Bultman who outlined the district’s fiscal year 2014 finances.
The board then agreed to serve meals to students at the Perry Child Development Center and Perry Community School District that meet the minimum requirements set by the United States Department of Agriculture and Iowa Department of Education. The child development center will pay the school district three dollars per enrolled participant that is served lunch.
Universal preschool 28E agreements were then approved with the Gingerbread House at St. Patrick’s Catholic School, Head Start at New Opportunities Inc and the Perry Area Child Development Center. The listed entities collaborate to provide programming for four year olds in the state’s Voluntary Preschool Program.
Board policy revisions were then approved in regards to transporting students in private vehicles, advertising and promotion and employee travel compensation. An allowable growth request was then approved to make up for the special education deficit if there is one because the Department of Education or auditors make adjustments causing a negative balance. Hy-Vee was approved as the district’s fresh fruit and vegetable vendor for the 2014-2015 school year and several personnel changes were approved. Finally, the Jayette basketball team’s uniform fundraiser was approved.
