Anyone wishing to receive updated information and learn more about farmland leasing is invited to a workshop at the Greene County ISU Extension office in Jefferson later this week.
Extension Coordinator Michael Cooley says the course will be led by ISU Extension farm management specialist Shane Ellis. Topics to be covered include updated land value and cash rental rate surveys, different types of farmland lease arrangement, determining fair cash rents, writing and terminating a farm lease and using other farmland leasing resources with ISU Extension.
Cooley talks about another important aspect of the workshop that deals with the new national Farm Bill.
“And this is something that’s going to actually impact landowners more so than they’ve probably been involved in some of the land decisions. Most particularly in choosing the type of crop insurance that you have. A lot of times you’re renter is able to make that decision for you but it’s my understanding that the farmland owner is the only person who can actually go in and register their land.”
Pre-registration is encouraged to avoid paying a late fee. The cost to attend is $20 per person or $30 for a couple. Pre-registration is requested by Wednesday, August 6th with the class to be on Thursday, August 7th from 1-3:30pm at the Extension office in Jefferson.
Participants will receive a workbook with supporting materials about farmland leasing options and resources. The participation fee will increase $5 if you sign up the day of the workshop.
