Think Perry First When Shopping for School Supplies
With school starting back up in just a couple weeks, students and parents are busy picking up the necessary supplies for the year.
When doing so, Perry Chamber Executive Director Bob Wilson reminds residents to think Perry first.
“There’s some great stores, some great sales, there’s an awesome selection of amenities. School supplies are not cheap but if you shop local, these stores that you support are going to support the school, their going to support your children, through other ways with programming of special events to maybe there’s little league teams etc. So the more money you put here the more money you’re going to see into the local economy” says Wilson.
Dry Week in the Raccoon River Valley
None of our local weather reporting areas were able to register normal monthly rainfall amounts this July.
According to the National Weather Service, Guthrie Center received no precipitation this week, ending the month with 3.33 inches of rain total.
Jefferson received 0.11 inch for a total of 4.28 inches in July. And 0.36 inch of rain was registered in Perry this week for a total of 3.33 inches this month.
Normal monthly rainfall is 4.42 inches for Perry, 4.61 inches for Jefferson and 4.86 inches for Guthrie Center.
Fortunately the entire state of Iowa remains drought free, with the exception for the southwest corner where the soil is abnormally dry.
Registrations Needed for Perry’s Business Design Lab
Perry’s new Business Design Lab is starting up this fall and anyone who wants to be part of the inaugural class needs to apply soon.
As we’ve mentioned, the program spans over 12 months with one roughly four hour meeting per month. It will be moderated by Mike Wagner of the White Rabbit Group and topics discussed will be chosen by the group as time goes on.
Which is why Chamber of Commerce President Mark Powell says the most diverse the class is, the better. They’re looking for people from small and large business, public and private sector, for profit and non-profit. And it doesn’t matter where you are at in your career, Powell believes everyone can gain something from the program.
Tuition for the Design Lab varies depending on the size of your business and there are tuition reimbursement grants available.
Applications can be obtained through any board member or at the Chamber office. You can call 465-4601 for more information. Applications are due by August 15th.
Large Goal Set for First Freedom Fest
As we told you earlier this week… a new event aimed at helping support those who fight for our country and their families is happening this weekend in Adel.
Freedom Fest founder Brenna Young says the daylong event has something for everyone to enjoy from young to old and everything in between. She says there will also be an auction with items like a hot air balloon ride and a night at the Hotel Pattee up for grabs.
And as we’ve mentioned, it’s for a good cause, supporting the Adel American Legion, the Child Youth Program and Warrior and Family Services Branch.
Even though it’s the first event, Young is hoping to start with a bang with a goal of raising $10,000.
Freedom Fest takes place at Park Place Catering in Adel with lunch starting at 11am, activities throughout the afternoon and the Freedom Dance at 7:30.\
Josh Davis Poker Run Set for August 9th
The 4th annual Josh Davis Memorial Poker Run takes place next month and organizers are hoping this year’s event will be the best one yet.
Kicking off with signups and breakfast at the Crooked Rail at 8am Saturday, August 9th the ride itself begins at 10:30 from the Josh Davis Plaza.
In total the run covers 150 miles with stops in Grand Junction, Paton, Lehigh, Woodward and Perry.
Once riders return, poker hands will be drawn at the Perry Elks Lodge and participants will enjoy a meal. There will also be live and silent auctions, along with a raffle.
Registration is $15 for riders and merchandise will also be available for purchase.
Proceeds from the event will go to the Josh Davis Scholarship award and the Retrieving Freedom charity for pairing service dogs with veterans.
