More than 1,100 students from metro area schools will be gathering at the Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines later this month, all for a good cause.
Among them will be a team of students from the Adel DeSoto Minburn school district. The 2014 Student Challenge aims to package more than 450,000 meals for starving people both locally and around the world.
The event is a kick-off to the Annual Hunger Fight. ADM is providing transportation for any student in grades 9-12 that would like to help package the food.
Participants are also encouraged to help fundraise. Since each meal costs just 20 cents, all donations help make a difference. A child can eat two meals a day for a whole year for less than $150 with this program.
The Team ADM shift is from 6-8pm, though students who have sport practice can help during different shifts if they provide their own transportation.
All students need to register individually and the service hours will be eligible for either National Honor Society or senior community service hour requirements.
