Seniors Wes Tipton and Zach Fouch will make one more appearance at Allensworth Field in Jefferson as the Greene County baseball team plays host to Heart of Iowa Activities Conference rival Nevada on Wednesday, July 16. The make up game has the JV teams playing at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity game on KG98 to start around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday’s game is both the last at home and the final regular season contest. Coach Mark Sawhill’s team is 10-14 overall and 7-9 in the conference while the Cubs started the week at 5-12 in league play and 7-17 overall. Nevada nipped the Rams 6-5 in Nevada in the first meeting when they scored three times in the bottom of the seventh inning. Greene County has won five of its last seven contests while the Cubs lost eight of its previous nine games prior to the start of this week.
Greene County opens Class 3A District 15 play on Friday, July 18 on KG98 vs. top 10 rated Harlan Community in Harlan. Carroll and Denison-Schleswig play at 5 p.m. with the Rams and Cyclones to follow at approximately 7:30 p.m. Harlan won the Hawkeye 10 Conference title and is a State Tournament regular.
