Coming up this weekend is Guthrie Center’s “Sizzlin Sale Days,” and one of the organizations that will be participating is the Guthrie County Arts Council through their store, Art on State.
As part of their involvement, Arts Council member Debbie Menning says they’ll have work displayed of this month’s featured artist, Jesse Scales. She describes for us what Scales’ art is like.
“Jesse is a painter and he does drawings. He was born in New Orleans, which I think it’s kind of fascinating that he ended up in Guthrie Center, Iowa. When he was a child, Charles Shultz, the creator of the comic strip series Charlie Brown, was one of his favorites, and although I’m not an art critic, I can see fun, like comic strips in some of his works. One of his drawings at the art store is Yoda from the Star Wars series.”
Scales is the fourth artist to be recognized by the Arts Council as part of their new “Meet the Artist” series that began this year. The local artists who have already been featured in 2014 are Gina Lloyd, Sheri Heiland and Larry Glade.
Menning says Art on State will have many activities going on throughout “Sizzlin Sale Days” this weekend, including a couple of artist demonstrations.
There will also be an old-school popcorn machine set up that the public can enjoy for free.
