For the third straight year, the Perry Jayette softball team picked up a first round Regional win knocking off Hawkeye 10 Co-Champion Harlan 8-6 in a Class 4A Region 8 matchup. Senior Kylie Brandt led the 9 hit attack with 2 hits and 2 RBI. After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, Perry scored twice in the second and third innings and pushed across four runs in the fourth. Designated Player Rose Delateur delivered a key 2-out RBI hit to get the Jayettes on the board. Victoria Hegstrom followed with a RBI double to tie the game at 2 apiece. The Jayettes took the lead for good in the third inning capitalizing on 2 Cyclone errors. Rachel Kinney and Brandt delivered back to back RBI hits to give Perry a 4-2 lead.
The Jayettes led 8-2 when Harlan scored four times in the sixth. Kassie Craig belted a 2 run homerun and Ashley Kolbee added a solo shot to make things interesting. Harlan had the tying runs on base at second and third in the 7th but Emma Olejniczak forced a groundball off the bat of Craig and Kate Whelchel fired home to get a tag out at the plate to keep the 2 run lead. One batter later, Julie Sorfonden grounded out to Whelchel and the Jayettes celebrated their 18th win of the season.
Perry (18-11-1) will now travel to Dallas Center Saturday night for a matchup with defending state champion and top ranked DC Grimes. The Phillies are 36-1 with their one loss to Johnston 2-0. The two former RRC rivals have not met this year. Shawn Kenney will have the call Saturday on KDLS 1310 AM and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com at 6:45.
