A cigarette is blamed for an apartment fire in Jefferson on Sunday.
Police Chief Dave Morlan says at 5:11am, an officer, the Jefferson Fire Department, a Greene County Sheriff’s deputy and the Greene County Emergency Medical Services responded to an apartment fire at 1216 Westwood Drive, apartment two.
Morlan states that it took the fire department about an hour to put out the flames and the fire was contained to the living room area.
He comments that the cause is believed to be from a cigarette that may have caught a mattress on fire. 27 year-old Juan Guzman was the tenant of the apartment.
Morlan notes that no one was injured from the fire and that the apartment is a total loss due to not only the fire but also from smoke damage.
