Junior right hander Colton Fitzpatrick tossed a three-hit shut out, the defense played errorless baseball, and Riah Nelsen hit a home run on Friday night. The Result was a 4-0 Greene County victory over PCM (Monroe) at Allensworth Field in Jefferson, which snapped the Rams’ eight game losing streak. The victory puts Greene County at 4-11 overall and 4-8 in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference while the Mustangs fell to 7-7 overall and 6-6 in the conference.

Fitzpatrick was staked to a 3-0 lead after three innings and he made it stand up, and then some. With seven strikeouts, two walks, and just three hits allowed, the Paton-Churdan student was impressive. Nelsen’s solo homer was down the left field line in the sixth inning and it easily cleared the 315 foot sign. It’ s his first this season and second of his career. In fact, in 48 games between 2013 and this season, Nelsen is the only Ram to hit a home run. In all, Nelsen drove in three of the four runs. Daric Whipple had the other RBI. Alex Rasmussen doubled, while Jordan Challen, JC Weitl, Jordan Hostetler, and Tyler Beger all added singles.

Greene County head coach Mark Sawhill said a rain out Thursday really helped his team. He said he felt the players were more relaxed and had fun. “Colton pitched smart and Jordan (Challen) called a good game behind the plate,” the coach added.

The Rams play in Colfax on Monday vs. Colfax-Mingo.
