Three early runs held up and junior pitcher Colton Fitpatrick went the distance as Greene County upended Roland-Story 3-2 in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference baseball at Allensworth Field on Wednesday night. The Norsemen are ranked third in the Iowa Baseball Coaches Association Class 2A preseason poll.
Greene County scored twice in the first inning and once more in the third for a 3-0 lead. R-S had single runs in the fourth and seventh innings. Greene County survived despite committing five errors. Neither R-S run was earned as Fitzpatrick scattered five hits. He walked three batters, hit one, and fanned three.
The Rams had six hits including a Fitzpatrick double. Junior Alex Rasmussen singled twice while juniors Riah Nelsen and Jordan Hostetler, plus sophomore Tyler Beger, each added one single.
Both teams are 1-1 overall and in conference play. The Rams play in Prairie City on Friday night vs. PCM for the first road game of the season.
