Greene County’s Habitat for Humanity Helping Hands program will be involved in at least five projects this year.
Board President Harry Ahrenholtz says there are three houses in Jefferson, one in Grand Junction and a house in Scranton.
He states that they’ve started working on one house located at 606 West State Street in Jefferson. That project has volunteers scraping off old paint and repainting the exterior and replacing the roof. Ahrenholtz points out that people of all skill levels are welcomed to help out and he adds that you can become a more well-rounded person by helping out.
“You’d be surprised, people who think, ‘well gosh I can’t help, I really don’t have skills in carpentry or anything else.’ By the time they’ve spent a day or two on the job with folks that do, they go away with the knowledge and the skills that allow them to come back and help us again.”
Helping Hands is a local program of Habitat for Humanity where volunteers are asked to help make repairs to existing, qualified houses rather than building a home from the ground up.
Ahrenholtz notes that when they are finished at 606 West State Street in Jefferson, they’re next home will be at 402 Ninth Street in Grand Junction. Volunteers will be needed to help build a new entryway, installing a new entry door and a living room window and painting the exterior.
He invites anyone to join them and help make a difference in Greene County with Habitat for Humanity’s Helping Hands program. They work on Saturdays throughout the spring and summer.
