Leaking issues with the Perry High School gymnasium roof are expected to continue this summer once the weather warms back up.
Thankfully, the roof didn’t’ leak this week with the heavy rains we experienced but the district believes it’s a condensation issue that’s causing the problems.
“That building was initially built in 2002 and the high school gym roof initially had condensation problems but of course it usually didn’t happen until August because it was the humidity and then it was dripping from the roof. Someone told me at one time it was almost like a drizzle or a rain” says Ubben. “So then fixes would happen, many fixes, through the architect for the school district, engineers, people have been called in throughout the years. But sometimes then you don’t know if your fix worked until the next August or July when it gets hot and humid.”
That’s Superintendent Lynn Ubben who says they’re hoping that progress is being made so they don’t have to look at replacement.
“The board has said, we’re kind of getting to the point that if the next fix doesn’t work we might have to take the roof off. We keep trying. It is 2014 and it was built in 2002 so we have other things we have to take care of in the gym but of course we have to get that roof fixed before we’re able to repair the floor and other things.”
Plans are to try another repair method later this spring once school is out for the year.
